Entry and Stay in Italy

Entry visa for research and study, residence permit for international lecturers and researchers:

Practical guide for foreign guests on visas, tax code, health care and University services

Accommodation

The University of Florence does not have accommodation facilities of its own; however, it provides information on a number of facilities to help its guests find suitable accommodation.

Accommodation facilities with reservations are intended for students involved in specific projects funded by European/international institutions, PhD students, research fellows and foreign post-docs, with reservations handled by the Internationalization Promotion and Development Office, upon request from the hosting Department/School.

The accommodation facilities that can be booked have limited availability; therefore, requests must be submitted sufficiently in advance. To request a reservation, please send an email to costanza.bigazzi@unifi.it.

Accommodation facilities at special University rates are also available, with direct booking.

Canteens

International students may use the canteen services if they hold the specific card issued by DSU after submitting an identity document and a document certifying enrolment at the University of Florence, such as the university record booklet.

International lecturers and researchers may also use the university canteen upon specific certification by the Director of the hosting Department, to be sent to DSU at ristorazione.fi@dsu.toscana.it. The certification must include the visitor’s personal details and period of stay, and must officially certify their position within the Department.

Badge for access to the Department and laboratories

Guests who will carry out work activities at the Department must follow a computerized procedure to request access to the facility. Access to laboratories requires completion of the relevant specific safety training courses.

Health care and insurance

Procedures for international students, lecturers and researchers:

Tax Code

This is a certificate attesting the tax code assigned to the person concerned — whether an individual or a non-individual entity — and the corresponding personal data registered in the Italian Tax Register.

Bank account

Foreign citizens must declare whether they are staying in Italy when opening the account. They are considered residents if they have their habitual residence or domicile in Italy or are registered in the registry office of their municipality of residence for at least 183 days per year.
