An extremely rare process resulting from the fusion of two vector bosons in a purely electroweak interaction was observed in CMS data at the LHC. Mattia Lizzo, a PhD student of the Physics and Astronomy Department of Florence, with a contract of association with INFN, was the responsible person of the analysis. This measurement was considered almost impossible until not long ago, and it was made possible by advanced analysis techniques developed within the CMS group in Florence. This result represents a new handle to try and corner the standard model in the search for new physics.
